It looked like Pitt was gonna have a dream season when they opened up with a 3-1 win against SEC powerhouse Kentucky that was ranked #20 at the time and then defeated UCF 6-0. The win over Kentucky marked the first over a top-25 opponent since Pitt ended No. 21 Notre Dame’s run in the ACC Tournament in 2015.
The team started the season 9-0 and reached #20 in a major poll. The Panthers suffered their first loss on day one of the Troy Classic with a 0-1 loss to Lipscomb. The Panthers were 12-2 when ACC conference play started with a 5-1 loss to North Carolina. From there the teams season took a down turn ending their season with a 24-23 record including 8-7 at home and 6-13 away games. They went 7-17 in the ACC.
Their young pitching staff, Kayla Harris 4.06 ERA, 9-8 ,Brittany Knight 4.11 ERA, 13-12 and Sarah Dawson 4.27 ERA 2-3, at times throughout the year showed moments of brilliance while at others where getting hit all over the place.
Pitt had some big bats like, Giorgiana Zeremenko .295 BA, 11 HR, 35 RBI, Alexis Solak, 4 HR, 23 RBI, McKayla Taylor, 8 HR, 25 RBI, Erin Hershman, 9 HR, 33 RBI.
Even though they didn’t make the playoffs this year the good news for Pitt is this was a young team with a lot of returning players that head coach Holly Aprile can work with to improve next season and maybe make a run at the playoffs.
