Ole Miss (Mississippi) Rebels 2017 Season

Ole Miss had a great season going 43-20 overall and 10-14 in the SEC. They were 23-6 at home, 6-12 on the road and 14-15 against Top 25 teams. They also won this year’s SEC Tournament Championship defeating Florida, 2-0, Alabama 4-1 and LSU 5-1 along the way.

Many of the kudos for Ole Miss’ successful season have to go to their coaching staff lead by head coach Mike Smith and pitching coach Taryne Mowatt.

Without a doubt the spirit heart of the team is pitching transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Kaitlin Lee. The right handed pitcher at times during the late season seemed to almost will her team to victory. Like the Energizer Bunny that keeps going Lee seems to have endless amounts of energy. One example is instead of resting between innings she’s up leading the cheers for her fellow teammates. Lee ended the year with a 1.82 ERA and 23-11 record. She is also our site’s, ‘2017 Player of the Year’. Her fellow pitching mates included, Morgan Bruce, 2.85 ERA, 8-5, Elisha Jahnke, 1.70 ERA, 0-1, Brittany Finney, 1.80 ERA, 6-1 and Alyssa Clayton, 2.74 ERA, 6-2.

Offensively the team was lead by Elantra Cox, .429 BA, Kylan Becker, .375 BA, Miranda Strother, .312 BA.

The Rebels got to host the opening regional round of the NCAA Tournament defeating, So. Illinois W, 8-0 (5 innings),
Arizona St. 2-0 and North Carolina 7-2 to move on to the Los Angeles Super Regionals round where they were eliminated in two very hard fought games against UCLA 7-8 (11 innings) and 0-1.

Although they will lose a few seniors I look for this team to continue to grow and become a yearly force to be reckoned both within the SEC and NCAA Tournaments for many years to come.
