First Round Wrap Up:
Let me start by giving a wrap up of how I done with my first round picks.
As I thought Alabama’s pitching was too much for Arkansas with Alabama jumping to a first inning 3-0 lead and cruising from there to win it 4-1.
My Ole Miss win prediction in a close game was right on as Ole Miss ended up winning 2-1 in a game that was close right down until the last inning. Much of the credit for the win goes to the strong complete game pitching performance of Ole Miss’ Kaitlin Lee.
I messed up on the Kentucky vs. South Carolina game picking the upset and South Carolina to win. The game was scoreless but then Kentucky’s bats came to life and kept widening the gap to take the win 7-3.
In the nightcap game of the opening round my pick of LSU over Missouri came through thanks to a Sahvanna Jaquish grand slam that broke open what to that point was a 2-2 game. LSU won 6-5.
So I finished the day with a 3-1 record with my opening round picks.
Second Round Picks:
Round two games get started with Alabama taking on Texas A&M. The game will be played on the SEC network Thursday starting at noon. Alabama has Sydney Littlejohn 14-7 with a 1.23 ERA, and Alexis Osorio is 20-7 with a 1.34 ERA and 287 strikeouts in 167.1 innings on their side while Texas A&M has Trinity Harrington (13-2, 1.60) , Samantha Show (17-6, 1.89 ERA) and Lexi Smith 11-1 record and a 1.65 ERA handling the pitching duties for the Aggies. Both teams also have the firepower although Alabama has struggled some this year. For Texas A&M Riley Sartain leads the team with a .364 average and 41 RBI, while Tori Vidales paces the Aggies with 14 home runs and is second on the team with 40 RBI. For Alabama it’s Demi Turner, who is batting .387, but unable to play recently due to an eye injury and vision problems. Peyton Grantham tops the team in doubles (9), home runs (7) and RBI (39). I’m taking Texas A&M to win this one.
What does Ole Miss get for its reward of winning their first round game against Mississippi State? A rematch from last
year’s SEC conference playoff game when they met #1 Florida. Even though they lost last years game it was close and though Florida is once again ranked #1 and overloaded with talent and a pitching staff that includes 2017 SEC Pitcher of the Year Kelly Barnhill, Delanie Gourley and Aleshia Ocasio. Plus Florida has the offensive firepower to put runs on the scoreboard when needed. I still look for Ole Miss to put up a good fight and I also love the job head coach Mike Smith is doing turning this team around and making them very competitive. But I think Florida just has too much talent and should win. But I do look for Ole Miss to put up a good fight in the game. The game will be played Thursday at 2:30 pm on the SEC Network.
Kentucky moves on to play against Auburn in their second round game. The Thursday game can be seen on the SEC Network starting at 5 pm. I’m liking Auburn to win this one. Clint Myers has Auburn playing good even with the recent team distractions and should be moving on to round three with the win.
LSU gets to face off against host team Tennessee on Thursday at 7:30 pm on the SEC Network in their second round game. I’m gonna go with Tennessee to win mainly because of their power pitching duo of Matty Moss and 2017 SEC Freshman of the Year: Caylan Arnold. Tennessee also has firepower thanks to 2017 SEC Player of the Year: Meghan Gregg. And LSU is still dealing with a banged up pitching staff.
