Texas softball utilizes entire roster in blanking McNeese State, 4-0
All 20 Longhorns players saw time on the diamond, while five UT pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout
AUSTIN, Texas – On a beautiful Wednesday evening at Red & Charline McCombs Field, Texas softball (17-11) utilized all 20 players on its roster, and UT’s five pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Longhorns picked up their third consecutive victory by blanking McNeese State (19-11), 4-0.
Junior right-hander Paige von Sprecken earned the win from the circle as the most effective reliever, tossing two innings of no-hit ball with a walk in improving to 5-2 overall. Redshirt sophomore Erica Wright started the contest, walking two, striking out three and allowing just one hit over two frames. Senior Tiarra Davis, junior Kristen Clark and sophomore Brook Bolinger each worked a single inning in the combined shutout.
Senior shortstop Devon Tunning guided Texas’ nine-hit offensive output by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Sophomore pinch hitter Bekah Alcozer (1-for-1) blasted her fourth HR of the season, senior third baseman Celina Felix
was 1-for-2 with a RBI, junior catcher Randel Leahy was 1-for-1 with a RBI double and freshman second baseman Jade Gortarez was 1-for-2 with a RBI.
Walks got Wright in a little bit of trouble right from the start in the top of the first as McNeese State right fielder Justyce McClain and catcher Erika Piancastelli each drew one-out free passes. With two down following the UT hurler’s second strikeout of the frame, McNeese third baseman Alexandria Saldivar ripped a promising single through the left side.
Texas senior Stephanie Wong charged from her defensive position in left, however, to corral the ball and fired a strike to the plate to cut down McClain and end the threat.
Having escaped the early jam with no damage, the Longhorns offense wasted no time sprinting to an early lead during the bottom of the first. After a Tunning leadoff single, senior designated player Mickenzi Krpec walked to station Longhorns at the corners with two retired. Leahy stepped to the dish and continued her recent hot streak by driving a ball past first and down the line for a RBI double to grant Texas an early one-run lead. Back-to-back high-chopped singles on the infield by Felix and Gortarez soon plated two more as the Longhorns boosted their advantage to 3-0.
Meanwhile, the Cowgirls got single base runners on over the third through the fifth frames on a single, a hit batter and a walk, respectively, but couldn’t string anything together against a trio of relievers in Davis, Clark and Bolinger.
Looking for valuable insurance on the scoreboard, Texas got some in the bottom of the sixth as Alcozer blasted a
two-out solo HR over the wall in left center to make it 4-0.
McNeese State managed a little one-out life in the top of the seventh against von Sprecken on a hit-by-pitch and a walk.
The UT hurler made a tremendous catch, however, on a liner back to the circle from pinch hitter Taylor Edwards. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native turned quickly and doubled off the Cowgirl runner at second for a game-ending double play.
