PITTSBURGH – Head softball coach Holly Aprile announced the addition of Gabrielle Fredericks, a mid-year transfer from the University of Akron, to the 2017 roster.
A first baseman/catcher, Fredericks will be eligible to play this coming season and will arrive at Pitt as a sophomore. The New Philadelphia, Ohio, native spent her freshman year playing for the Zips.
In her lone season at Akron, Fredericks led the team with a .319 average, while recording 46 hits, including 13 doubles. She tallied 25 RBI and also scored 12 times.
Fredericks was named to the 2016 MAC All-Tournament Team for her performance during the Zips’ time in the postseason. The then first-year player went 7-for-11 (.636), with six RBI and three doubles.
Prior to attending Akron, Fredericks attended Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School where she was a three-sport athlete. She was a four-year varsity letterwinner in softball and also lettered in volleyball and basketball.
On the field for the Saints, she was a consistent threat at the plate all four years. During her sophomore year she posted a career-high 50 RBI, prior to hitting a career-best .583 in her senior year. She also tallied 51 hits and pushed 42 runs across the plate in her final season. Her career performances in RBIs (170) and hits (180) landed her in the Ohio High School Athletic Association state record book.
Pitt opens the season Feb. 10 in Orlando, Fla., at the UCF Tournament. The Panthers will play Kentucky, Florida A&M and host Central Florida.
